The Institute for the Public Services (IPS) Traineeship Scheme is a structured learning experience designed to teach students practical knowledge and skills in a specific industry or profession within the Malta Public Administration. This Scheme combines on-the-job training with formal education.

The IPS Traineeship Scheme is targeted at students who are reading for a qualification at EQF level 6 & 7 (not in ICT or IT related areas of study) within the Mata College for Arts Science and Technology (MCAST), the University of Malta (UoM) or any other recognised tertiary education institution in Malta. This Scheme is intended to assist students in obtaining 21st-century skills, focusing on the knowledge, skills, and competencies required in today's work environment.

One of the main objectives of the IPS Traineeship Scheme is to promote and enhance labour market opportunities for students. The duration of the IPS Traineeship Scheme is determined by duration of the students' theoretical programme. In this manner, students are in a better position to manage their studies while working within their respective area of studies.

The IPS Traineeship Scheme opportunities are issued twice a year during the Careers Expo and Freshers' Week at UoM and MCAST. During these events, students can visit the Malta Public Service stand, discuss areas of interest and also register for various opportunities within the Malta Public Administration, including the IPS Traineeship Scheme. Furthermore, students can also apply online through their respective Educational Institutions:

  • UoM: Students can apply by sending their CVs & Acceptance Letter to the IPS through UM's placement website. Furthermore, students wishing to have their placement recognised on their academic transcript are to apply through the Degree Plus Programme after they successfully complete their placement.
  • MCAST: Calls have been distributed amongst students through Classter System. Students are to submit their CV & Letter of acceptance on [email protected]
  • Other Higher Education Institutions: students can forward their CV & Letter of acceptance by email on [email protected] and are guided by the Institute for the Public Services accordingly.
